Self-care related New Year’s resolutions you’ll actually want to keep

New Year’s resolutions are tricky. On the one hand, making them feels empowering, productive and positive. Like you’ve got your life under control and you’re making a real effort to improve yourself. Which are all good things, right?

Well yes, as long as you actually keep them. Because let’s be honest— we’ve all been there… when March (or February...) rolls around and we haven’t read as many books as we said we would, eaten as healthy as we wanted, or tried as many new things...you get the gist. That leaves us feeling pretty crummy.

So here are seven realistic, doable resolutions that 1. will undoubtedly improve your well-being 2. help establish a healthy start to the year, and 3. you’ll actually want to keep!

1. Explore essential oils

Some people eat, sleep and breathe essential oils, literally. You don’t need to go full-on obsessed and incorporate them into every aspect of your life, but try a new facial serum that contains essential oils or pick up a diffuser— you can find diffusers under $20. Mix and match and find a scent that you love. Do a little research and pick a couple oils with benefits you could really use– such as Thieves Oil which supports a healthy immune system or Lavender Oil to promote calmness and relaxation. Or in our serum's case, Frankincense Oil, which is a Godsend for everything skin-related!

2. Moisturize (properly)

Yeah okay, I know what you’re thinking reading this one. “Pshh I do moisturize!” But take a moment and think about this one— how often do you moisturize? What kind of moisturizer do you use? Does it contain SPF? Do you moisturize in the shower/bath? Do you use the same moisturizer in the morning and at night? I know they can be pricey, but moisturizers don’t just keep your skin from getting dry and flakey. They protect you from the sun, reduce fine lines and wrinkles, and depending on the ingredients, can heal acne. Thankfully, we carry three different RESTORE Facial Moisturizers which contain healing oils, Green Tea Extract, Jojoba oil & more, and are still affordable. Also linked above, our favorite products to moisturize while in the shower or bath (yes, it's a thing)!

3. Give yourself an at-home facial once a week

Why? Because you deserve it. Facials are of course good for your skin— whether the purpose is to detox, hydrate, etc. But they can also be good for you psychologically. Think about it— when we take care of ourselves, we feel better emotionally, mentally, and physically. It really is so simple, yet so few of us truly take care of and love ourselves well. We challenge you to change that in 2020. It’s okay to put yourself first sometimes… not just okay, but necessary. 4. Drink more water

We could certainly all stand to do this! We hear this all the time, right? Well, for good reason. Drinking a lot of water can slow the aging process, reduce puffiness and swelling, clear acne, give you a glowing complexion, keep your skin supple and tight, and more. And those are just skin-related benefits! C’mon, let’s do this one together. No more going through the day and realizing the only water you had was from your coffee in the morning (no, that water intake doesn't count).

5. Try a new product or brand

At least once a month! We get it, when we find a product we really love, it’s pretty much ‘til death do us part. But if we live our whole lives this way, how are we supposed to find other products or brands we may love even more? Whether you’re on the hunt for the perfect *insert remedy here* or just as a treat to yourself once a month, we challenge you to try something new— whether it’s a go-to product from a different brand or a brand new product altogether. Why not, right?

6. Exfoliate

This is especially important  in a cold, dry climate like Colorado’s. All that dry skin that causes you to go through moisturizers like tissues? Odds are what you desperately need to incorporate into your routine is a quality exfoliator. Exfoliating dead skin helps generate new, healthy skin cell growth, deep cleans pores, and reveals even softer, younger looking skin. Then you moisturize. If you’re looking for an organic exfoliator that will simultaneously moisturize, we’ve got you covered. This one in particular contains organic coffee and organic cane sugar which exfoliate, but also ingredients such as sweet almond oil, jojoba oil, and Vitamins E and A, to promote healthy, hydrated skin.

7. Start making green smoothies in the morning

Greens like spinach, kale and celery are ah-mazing for your skin and overall gut health. Green vegetables contain antioxidants that reduce wrinkles and help prevent inflammation. If you want glowing skin, start from the inside and work your way out! Everything from beauty to mental health can be directly related to gut health. Take care of yourself by drinking greens and taking your vitamins, and your body will thank you (and reward you)!

While New Year’s  resolutions can be a good way to set new goals and hold yourself accountable, there is some good news that you must always remember: New Year’s resolutions do NOT define you, nor do they determine your worth. Let’s just get that straight right out of the gate. But taking on one or two (key word) reasonable goals for yourself can be a really healthy, cathartic exercise.

Whether you try one of the resolutions listed above or create your own, I challenge you to ask yourself these questions when coming up with resolutions for yourself:

1. Why am I doing this in the first place?

2. Who am I doing it for?

3. How will I feel if I succeed in keeping it? How will I feel if I don’t?

Here’s what your answers should sound like:

1. Because I want to lead a healthier, happier life.

2. ME! My friends and family will benefit from these improvements, but this is an effort to take care of myself.

3. I will feel good if I keep them, but will have grace for myself if I don’t. I will honor and thank myself for trying new things in the first place.
